Dirt
Jumping Setup If you plan on doing some heavy dirt jumping, you are going to need a really tough bike. First off, you are going to need a 100% 4140 CrMo (cromoly) frame. If you run anything weaker, you run the risk of cracking, bending, or even snapping your frame. Your fork and handlebars should be the same. Your stem should be CrMo, but you can get away with aluminum. You will want to run some CrMo 3 piece cranks. 1 piece cranks bend too easily for dirt jumping. You should run a set of 48 spoke wheels. You may want to run a gyro too. If you have front brakes, take them off. Take off any pegs you have too. Run at least a 42 tooth chainring. Slap on some knobby tires. That pretty much covers what you need for dirt jumping. Street Setup I would run the exact same parts you would use for dirt jumping, except (if you don't have one on already) run a gyro and all four pegs. You need things to be strong for street. If you have any old inner tubes lying around, you can line your tires with them. Cut off the valve and slice straight down the middle of the tube (if you did it right, the tube should still be in one piece). Line your good inner tube with the modified one and install your inner tube as normal. Now you can huck some huge gaps and not blow out your tire. Run a set of low profile tires and you're all set to ride. Vert / Freestyle / Mini-Ramp Setup You can use either an aluminum or CrMo frame for this. Gyro and pegs are optional, but I would recommend them. You can run either CrMo or aluminum forks, handlebars, and stems. I would recommend 3 piece cranks, but you can get away with one piece. You definitely need 48 spoke rims. I would run about a 45 tooth chainring. Run a set of low profile tires. Slap on some front brakes too, and your all set. Flatland Setup One really different thing about flatland setups are the chainrings. Run about a 36 tooth chainring. Run an aluminum frame. Run aluminum parts as much as you can. You want a light bike. Use a gyro, front and rear brakes, and all four pegs. Run a set of light 48 spoke wheels and some low profile tires (not knobby, kind of flat-for scuffing), and you're all set. |
